Mother And Twin Daughter Trio Playing Masters Hockey

Atherton Tablelands Hockey Association has a mother and twin daughter trio playing in their Vet ladies competition. These ladies play at the Qld Women’s Masters State Championships every year for Atherton. They have played together in the same team for 5 years. All these ladies travelled to New Zealand last year as part of the Atherton team which played in the World Masters as North Oz Magic.

Shirley (MUM) is 64 this year and has played on and off since high school. Leanne and Robyn are 45 this year and have played on and off since they were in the Under 10 age division.

Their last name is Godfrey and have been affectionately named the ‘gods’, Shirley is the Mother of the Gods. This came about a few years ago at states when Leanne was running beside someone and our coach yelled out ‘god is with you’. From there the puns started and the name has stuck… God is on our side, thank the lord. The Atherton ladies are not religious and don’t aim to poke fun at religion, but as you can see have a sense of humour and enjoy their weekend of hockey. 😝 Mum Shirley got carded in NZ for a ‘lazy’ tackle where one of the twins pipes up that’s my mum she’s not lazy she’s just can’t get her bum around. Then one twin was green carded, but the other twin got sent off… the joys of twin-hood I’m sure… certainly not the first nor last time they will get mistaken for each other.

It was the first time any of them had been carded and she was chatting away, asking questions of the officials who they were insisting she be quite & sit so time could start!

Atherton Tablelands Hockey Association say, “The gods are great fun and we are very fortunate to have them in our association.”
