Atherton Tablelands Association

As Queensland Women’s Masters Hockey celebrates its 40th anniversary, we take a moment to reflect on Atherton’s contribution to this incredible journey. Our region has a rich history of dedication, teamwork, and passion for the game, and we are proud to have been part of Masters Hockey for nearly three decades.

Atherton first entered a team in the Queensland Veteran Women’s Championships in 1995 in Cairns, marking the beginning of our participation in this prestigious competition. We lost the Grand Final to Cairns 1 nil. While we missed the 1996 and 1997 tournaments, we returned in 1998 and have been a steadfast presence ever since. Over the years, Atherton has fielded one, two, or even three teams at different times, demonstrating the strength and depth of our local hockey community—an astounding achievement for such a small association.

Atherton celebrated notable successes, winning Division 4 in Maryborough in 2002, Atherton 2 won Division 6 in Townsville in 2022, and making several finals over the years. Additionally, several of our players have been chosen to represent Queensland, a testament to the talent and dedication within our club.
One of the most remarkable milestones in our history was witnessing two generations take the field together—Shirley Godfrey and her twin daughters Leanne & Robyn playing in the same team, embodying the spirit of Masters Hockey: camaraderie, inclusivity, and a lifelong love of the sport.

Carrie de Brueys was honoured with the Hockey Qld Women’s Masters Service Award in 2022, a testament to her dedication and contributions to the sport. While this award is a more recent initiative, our club acknowledges the many delegates and passionate players before her who have been just as deserving of recognition for their commitment and outstanding efforts in ensuring that Atherton Hockey continues to thrive. We’d like to acknowledge a few key people – Di Ramsey, Heather Quadrio, Andrea Martin and Sharon Voyce.
As we celebrate 40 years of Women’s Masters Hockey in Queensland, we acknowledge all past and present players, coaches, officials, and supporters who have shaped our journey. But it’s the bonds formed on and off the field are what make Masters Hockey so special, and we look forward to many more years of representing Atherton with pride.
Here’s to the next chapter in our history—stronger together, playing the game we love!
