Masters Women’s Hockey in Mackay has a proud and enduring history, dating back to the formation of the region’s first team in 1985.
That inaugural side competed in Townsville and featured dedicated pioneers such as Deidre Cassar, Lesley Fisher, Linda Macklin, Helen Ringuet, Fay Walker, Christine Zillfleisch, Lyn Blackmur, C. Glew, Helen McKay, J. Shoneveld, Val Wesche, and Antionette Borg, with Val McCubben serving as manager.

From 1985 to 1994, Mackay consistently fielded a single team. By the mid-1990s, the region’s involvement grew, with two teams participating between 1995 and 1999. The turn of the century saw further expansion, with three to four teams representing Mackay from 2000 to 2018. A remarkable milestone was reached in 2019, when six teams competed, showcasing the sport’s growing popularity among women in the region. In recent years, Mackay has continued to maintain strong representation, fielding two to three teams from 2021 to 2024.

Mackay teams have enjoyed significant success at the state level, securing numerous championships across various divisions. Notable victories include multiple Division 1 titles in 1995, 1996, 2001, and 2021, alongside other achievements such as Team 3’s win in Division 6 in 2016 and Team 5’s Division 6 triumph in 2019. Additional state titles span across divisions, with victories in 1999, 2003, 2011, 2012, 2017, 2019, and 2023, reflecting Mackay’s sustained competitive strength.

The community’s dedication to Masters Hockey is further highlighted by the prestigious Association Service Awards, recognizing outstanding contributions from individuals. Val McCubben (2014), Bev Dunn (2015), Patricia Hansen (2016), Justin Shepherd (2019), Candace McFarlane (2021), and Janene Moore (2023) have all been honored for their service, exemplifying the passion that drives the sport forward in the region. From its humble beginnings to its current stronghold, Masters Women’s Hockey in Mackay continues to thrive, reflecting the dedication, camaraderie, and sportsmanship that define this vibrant sporting community.
