Maryborough joined the ranks of the Queensland Veterans Women (now Queensland Masters) in 1986, the second year after its inception.  Since that time our teams have competed in every Championship (with the exception of 2020 due to Covid).

From 1986 to 1996 we had one team compete at the Championships.  From 1997 till the present day, we have had at least 2 teams, with 4 teams in 2002 and 3 teams in 2003, 2014 and 2024.

Over the years our teams have tasted success, winning 11 Championships in various divisions:  Division 1: 1992, 1994, 2014; Division 2: 2013, 2016; Division 4: 1997, 2015, 2018; Division 5: 2014; Division 6: 2009, 2024.

Maryborough players have been rewarded with State and National representation, far too many over the years to name individually.  Special mention needs to be made of Anne Proctor and Mary Frederiksen (originals), Rosely Giddey and Myra Reilly who gained selection in Queensland teams each and every year they played.

Anne was our first National Representative, with Rosely and Myra also going on to play for the Green and Gold.

All 4 of these ladies have been recognised by both Hockey Australia and Hockey Queensland for their contributions to Masters Women’s Hockey over the years.  All 4 are still involved to this day.

In particular, our Association was honoured and proud to be asked to host the 30th Anniversary of Masters Women’s Hockey in Queensland in 2014.  The organising committee, led by Kathy Rogers, worked tirelessly for months to prepare for this event, which was the largest State Championship held that year with almost 50 teams competing.  There was a meet and greet held on the first night, where awards were presented, acknowledgements made, and a cake was cut (by our First Coach Jim Wroe and Player Betty Hilliard) clebrating this magnificent milestone.

We would like to acknowledge the huge amount of work put into the memorabilia for this event by Myra Reilly and her band of merry workers (Myra continues with this work for the 40th Anniversary).  Another mention must go to the late Vicki Warren who was responsible for liaising with HQ and other officials on all things “Technical”.  Her contribution did not go unnoticed.

Following these Championships, Maryborough was awarded the prestigious “Association of the Year Award” by Hockey Queensland for 2014.

In 2024 we hosted again.  Although the weather was not kind to us and the tournament was reduced to only 2 days, our No 2 Team secured the Division 6 Championship.  We also christened our new uniforms, which have had many changes over the years, which can be seen by some of the photos.

Over the years, Masters Women’s Hockey has continued to grow and thrive.  We at Maryborough are proud to have been a part of this rich history so far and will continue to contribute in the years to come.
